Before the HMS Ringtail monument was erected back in 2004 very few people knew anything about what it was all about, some thought it was an RAF Station.
One thing is for sure that the former Naval Air Station is now a big part of the local community and much is known about it further afield. The history and heritage of it has the advantage of increasing awareness. Lots of new information and pictures /stories are turning up now, so much so that aviation artwork is in the town and so much more as well at that.

When HMS Ringtail closed in 1946 the officers of the air station had a trophy cast and presented it to Ormrkirk Golf Club in thanks for letting them use the clubs facilities.
The HMS Ringtail Trophy is still played for each year at the club
In 1941 the then Lordsgate Primary School was demolished to build the air station , for some years the school existed in Nissan huts. In later Years the Royal Navy paid for the construction of a new school at its present location. In 2007 the Fleet Air arm Association Greater Manchester Branch donated a trophy to the school. Each year the HMS Ringtail Trophy is presented to a pupil.
