The hamlet was captured by the Germans on 12 April 1918, and retaken by the 9th, 29th and 31st Divisions, with the ridge beyond it, on 18 and 19 August, but the cemetery was not used again during hostilities. He was wounded in the vicious fighting for Delville Wood  oft referred to by ‘Tommies’ as Devils Wood. The Kings lost around fifty all ranks in the action with a number missing, the conditions were described as atrocious, despite a failed attack no blame at all could be laid at the battalion.

As an indication of the ferocity of the fighting here, the South African Brigade numbering 121 officers 3,035 men entered the wood on the 14th July 1916 after almost a weeks fighting 750 walked out.

The fighting for this wood continued for a number of weeks and was considered some of the worst ever encountered on the Western Front, this was followed later in August / September by more of the same in the fighting for the adjacent High Wood.
